Fake and Unhelpful Virus Products
The distribution of fake anti-virus/malware products is increasing all the time.
Anti-virus labs receive a massive amount of new malware samples each day (22,000 new samples per day according to Panda Labs), and many anti-virus vendors are continually updating their services just to keep up with the overwhelming volume of new malware surfacing each day.
What To Do When You See Any Of The Above
Above and to the right are a few examples of fake alerts and anti-virus scans which look extremely convincing making one believe that they are legitimate Antivirus program.
Remember, if you interact with any one of these programs at any level, even just clicking the X in the top right corner of your window, could lead to serious infection.
If you find yourself looking at a screen that resembles any of the images above, or you know its not your own Antivirus program, immediately use Alt and F4 at the same time until all open windows have closed, (do not click anything).
Once all windows are closed, power off your computer the normal way. Wait until the computer turns off, then unplug the power cord and hold your power button in for about 30 seconds.
If this happens to you, you will risk further infections if you continue to use your computer.
From here the virus can be removed fairly easy and any prompt action taken by you could prevent or limit the infection to your system or network.
